The information below is not 100 percent exact and should be viewed as an estimate based on available research from academic studies, industry reports, life cycle assessments, and publicly available manufacturing data. Every supply chain is different, and environmental impacts can vary depending on farming practices, manufacturing processes, transportation, and production facilities. We are sharing this information to help provide greater transparency and to give a better understanding of some of the environmental considerations behind each purchase. These pants are made from 100 percent cotton canvas. Cotton is a natural plant fiber that is woven into a durable canvas fabric known for its strength and long service life. The environmental impact of cotton varies depending on where it is grown, irrigation methods, farming practices, and the manufacturing processes used to produce the finished fabric. Based on published life cycle assessments, the cotton used to produce one pair of canvas pants is estimated to require approximately 2,800 liters of water from cultivation through finished fabric. Water use can vary significantly depending on climate, rainfall, irrigation practices, and regional growing conditions. The fabric is finished to a white color through a bleaching process before garment production. Many textile mills use hydrogen peroxide as the primary bleaching agent because it breaks down into water and oxygen after use. Some facilities may use other bleaching methods depending on the desired fabric characteristics and manufacturing requirements. Wastewater generated during fabric processing is treated according to the environmental standards of the manufacturing facility. The total carbon footprint of one pair of pants is estimated to be approximately 2 to 3 kilograms of carbon dioxide equivalent. This estimate includes cotton cultivation, spinning, weaving, fabric finishing, garment manufacturing, transportation, and packaging. A significant portion of these emissions comes from producing the fabric, particularly the spinning and weaving processes, which require substantial amounts of energy. The garments are cut and sewn in a certified factory in China before being transported to the United States by ocean freight and distributed to customers through domestic shipping. Because these pants are made entirely from cotton and contain no synthetic fibers such as polyester or nylon, they do not release plastic microfibers during washing. Under the right environmental conditions, cotton is a biodegradable natural fiber. The metal buttons and rivets are not biodegradable but can be recycled where suitable recycling facilities are available. Each order is shipped using recycled paper or certified compostable packaging instead of conventional plastic polybags. The production of this packaging contributes a relatively small portion of the product’s overall environmental footprint. Most packaging components can be recycled or composted where appropriate facilities are available.
